The Staff

Dentaid currently has four full-time members of staff and one part-time based at the offices and workshop near Southampton.

Andy Jong

Chief Executive

Prior to joining Dentaid in August 2008, Andy was CEO for ROPE (Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere), a charity focussed on helping the poor. It operated over 80 grass roots partnerships in about 70 countries.

Before this, he was CEO of Christian charity BibleLands, which works in the Middle East and focuses on helping children with disabilities through the support of special schools and programmes.

He has an MBA from Bristol Business School and spent the early part of his career in a variety of roles with Somerset County Council.

Andy’s passion for charity work and international development was sparked when, after graduating, he worked as a volunteer on a rural development project in Kenya with the nomadic Samburu tribe.  There he was given the special responsibility for a desert reclamation extension project in the north of the country.

Raman Bedi was Chief Dental Officer – England from October 2002 to October 2005.

He was asked, in 2005, to establish the Global Child Dental Health Taskforce.  The mission of the taskforce is to support governments on how they can improve children’s oral health.  In 2010 it was working in 14 countries.

Professor Bedi is based at King’s College London and also holds an honorary chair at University College London, several universities in India and an “Extraordinary Professorship” in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.  He was the co-director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre at the Eastman Dental Institute (1998-2008).   He is a WHO consultant for the patient safety curriculum project    He has examined and lectured in over 40 countries and serves on 3 editorial boards

Professor Raman Bedi joined leading oral health charity Dentaid as its Clinical Director. The appointment commenced on June 1st 2010 and has been warmly welcomed by our Chief Executive

Professor Bedi is undertaking his role as Clinical Director with Dentaid on a pro bono basis whilst continuing his work as Head of the International Centre for Child Oral Health at Kings College, London. There is a natural synergy in the work Dentaid has been doing with that of the Global Child Dental Fund, the charity Professor Bedi has helped develop. Joint initiatives will be in the areas of responsible overseas volunteering, increased support for the work of the global taskforces in tackling the epidemic of child caries, a plan for more comprehensive equipment recycling and more engagement in oral health emergency responses to natural disasters.

Andy Jong.  Andy said, “I am delighted to welcome Raman as part of our team and anticipate that his contribution to Dentaid’s future goals will be extremely valuable. We are planning to work on some important initiatives together to address our shared concern for the global oral health situation”.
