Cordent Trust donation boosts Dentaid’s overseas kits
Oral health charity Dentaid has been donated £17,500 from the Cordent Trust. The Trust, which has recently disbanded, was a small charitable grant making organisation set up in 1970 to make grants to individuals and small charitable projects both in the UK and overseas.
Dentaid has chosen to use this generous donation to put together specialists’ kits to offer to overseas projects and volunteers. The kits will either be given to projects via subsidy or paid for by supporters who are volunteering overseas. £5,000 of the money has also been allocated to Bridge2Aid, a charity that provides dental and community development programmes in North West Tanzania.
To create a permanent legacy for Cordent Trust founder John Davis and keep the Cordent name alive, Dentaid has chosen to call the kits ‘Cordent kits.’ They will not only help Dentaid to extend its instrument operation but also keep the supply of instruments going long term.

Richard Grapes, Dentaid’s head of engineering, who designed the kits said “This donation will ensure a better provision of safe and affordable basic dental care for rural communities in many parts of the world. We send kits to numerous projects around the world including the Ukraine, India, Somalia, Romania, Bangladesh, Sudan and Rwanda to name but a few. Thank you so much to The Cordent Trust for supporting Dentaid. We will continue our work in the spirit of the trust to improve the oral health of disadvantaged around the world. “
Dentaid is currently offering 4 kits:
Full instrument Kit - Designed for extensively trained dental professionals (dentists, dental therapist equivalent) operating in areas without access to either clinical facilities or electricity. Principally an extensive extraction kit, it also includes instruments and materials for oral surgery.
Oral Health Promotion Kit – Designed for health workers to provide oral health promotion, particularly in low-income community settings like schools and health posts. The kit consists of four bright and nicely illustrated posters, two oral health story books and a giant tooth model. It also includes a starter kit of toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste.
ART Kit – Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a WHO endorsed method of providing simple fillings using hand instruments and Glass Ionomer (FUJI 1X). Not requiring electricity or sophisticated equipment or training, ART can be implemented by dentists or general health workers and is particularly appropriate to low income community environments.
RT & OUT Kit – This kit combines the main elements of all the above kits, to enable a single practitioner to provide a holistic oral health service to the community he/she serves. This is likely to be appropriate for resident health workers in rural communities.
