Dentaid launches portable chair for use in disadvantaged rural communities overseas
Oral health charity Dentaid has designed and created a portable dental chair that can be used out in the field in remote overseas rural communities.
The chair as been designed to carry out safe and effective dental treatment suited to both the patient and the dentist and has been costed at a low, affordable price. The portable chair is ideal to be used in conjunction with the Dentaid’s Cordent Instrument Kits. These portable kits consist of basic instruments to carry out extractions and simple dental treatments in rural areas.
The sourcing of a suitable dental chair is difficult when operating beyond the reach of electricity and delivering dental services in remote communities. Working in these remote areas poses significant challenges. There are seldom any suitable dental facilities and it is therefore essential for the dental practitioner to have portable equipment to carry out their work.
The chair is easily collapsible and easy to transport by car, boat or plane. Oral health care workers will not be tied to a building but can perform the treatment literally anywhere. Existing portable chairs can cost as much as $2,000 dollars which naturally prohibits their widespread use particularly for non - profit organisations, such as Dentaid. The Dentaid chair costs considerably less and has been designed specifically for community applications and functions.
Dentaid has taken advice from several dentists who have aided in ensuring that the design is most suited to the performance of the dentist and the comfort of the patient alike. The development of a low cost portable and easy to use dental chair for community oral health programmes supports the existing work that Dentaid is doing to provide improved dental care in remote areas which previously did not have access to any oral health care.
Dentaid has so far attracted funding for this project from the Rotary Club of Romsey Test to help finance the design stage of the chair and they will also assist with some funding for future chairs.
