Where We Work :: Uganda
|
Dentaid has been supporting projects in Uganda since our early days. We have supplied many static dental surgeries to clinics and community hospitals. In the last 18 months surgeries have been supplied to St Stephens Hospital, Mpererwe and Mt Elgon Hospital, Mbale |

Oral Health Education has been a priority in Uganda ever since our first schools tooth brushing programme was launched there. We continue to work with Mango Tree to produce the popular, specially designed, culturally appropriate posters to help educate communities of the importance of good oral hygiene |
|
Dentaid's work in Uganda has given a lot of focus to the traditional practice of Infant Oral Mutilation (IOM). Dentaid established the IOM Action Group and now with a group of Ugandan dentists we are working tirelessly to sensitise and re-educate communities about the dangers of the practice. |

Having sent out numerous dental surgeries to Uganda it has also been important to provide support with the maintenance of the dental equipment. In 2011 Dentaid's engineer, Dave Effamy and volunteer Clive Power, spent 3 weeks in Uganda visiting surgeries and carrying out Engineer Training Courses enabling local technicians to maintain the equipment. A recent progression at Dentaid is the development of the DentaidBox. Building on the success of Dentaid's portable chair we have now added a portable light and a portable suction unit. Along with a portable instrument kit and pressure cooker for sterilisation everything fits into a wheelie bin; making it a complete portable dental surgery. The first DentaidBox was sent to Uganda in February 2012 for trial. |

Volunteering trips to Uganda take place twice a year. These trips are led by Barbara Koffman, a retired hygienist who is now our Uganda Volunteer Co-ordinator. |
Uganda is a strategic area for Dentaid's continuing work and we expect the positive developments reported here to continue into 2013
