Oral Health :: Infant Oral Mutilation Materials

The Dentaid IOM Action Group has been working very hard to collate information to enable anyone who is interested to learn more about the practice of Infant Oral Mutilation. We have researched books and articles referring to this practice dating from 1905 to the present day and produced three information documents:

1. An Overview of Infant Oral Mutilation covering its practice, geographical distribution, techniques, morbidity and mortality, followed by a discussion on how a combative strategy might be designed, taking into account the experiences of previous workers.

The Dentaid IOM Document is available to download here.

2. A chronological analysis of the literature reviewed, giving full references, details of the aims and conclusions of each study and an indication as to the possible relevant importance of each one.  This will be updated periodically as other articles become available. If you know of relevant papers which are not mentioned in the IOM Literature Analysis, please contact Rosemary Longhurst at rosemary@dentaid.org.

The Dentaid IOM Literature Analysis is available to download here.

3. Dentaid's action group has produced an information leaflet designed to increase the awareness of IOM to dental professionals both here and abroad, and to charities and NGO's working in the countries in which IOM is prevalent.

The IOM Information Leaflet is available to download here.

Further copies are available free of charge. Please contact Rosemary Longhurst at rosemary@dentaid.org with your full details and the number you require.

The IOM Information Leaflet has been translated into Luganda (thanks to Gilbert Rwamwitani and Christian Relief Uganda) and Kiswahili (thanks to Pastor Edwin Ochola in Kenya) and these may be downloaded here.

The action group has also been working in partnership with Christian Relief Uganda's Dental Mission to enable Mango Tree, a Ugandan visual aids company, to produce a booklet (Mutesi's Beautiful Smile) and posters for use in health education to combat IOM. Please contact info@dentaid.org for details and to learn more about Mango Tree please visit www.mangotreeuganda.org.

We are looking for people who may be able to take on an elective project or who are interested in doing some further research into the practice of IOM within the IOM affected countries in  Africa. We are also seeking to start some research into the practice and prevalence of IOM in the UK.

Please contact the IOM Action Group on info@dentaid.org.
