Dentaid has recently taken on six new schools in their schools oral health promotion programme.

Ihunga Primary School

This is a rural school approximately 50km from Kabale. The school began in 1976. There are 629 pupils at the school. The main interests of the school are music and sport. Three quarters of the pupils pass onto secondary school. The daily food is Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and beans. Few of the children have school uniform. There are many orphans and most parents are peasants. The general health of the children is not good and a majority have dental problems. They do not have a balanced diet. This leads to poor oral health. The children assist their parents in domestic work and also have holiday sports competitions.

 

Kicumbi Primary School

This school is in a rural location 8km along the road to Kabale - Katuna road. The school started as a government aided project in 1953. There are 774 pupils at the school. There are four permanent classrooms and ten permanent classrooms. The pupils are mostly interested in sports and music. The food is poor at the school.The majority of the pupils cannot afford school uniforms. The families are mostly peasantry. The basic needs of parents and their children cannot be sustained due to lack of income. There are many orphans in the school. Most children have poor health due to lack of proper nutrition and medical care. They do not brush their teeth and in many cases are rotten. In the holidays the children work in the gardens at home. Some work to buy school materials.

 

Kiyebe Primary School

This is a rural school located approximately 50km from Kabale along high mountain roads.The school began in 1984. There are 650 pupils at the school. The main interests of the school are music and sport. There are six permanent classrooms and three temporary classrooms. There is significant interest in sport and music. Some children take a packed lunch but many do not eat at lunch time. There are many orphans and most parents are very poor. The general health of the children is not good and a majority have dental problems. They do not have a balanced diet. This leads to poor oral health. They are very much in need of education about health issues. The children assist their parents in domestic work, digging and fetching water because water sources are wells.

 

Mukibaya Primary School

This school is in a rural location 32km from Kabale off the Kabale - Kisoro Road. The school started in 1982 with three classes in temporary buildings but now it is a full primary school. There are 323 pupils at the school.The pupils are mostly interested in music and games. The daily food at the school is potatoes and beans. The children’s background is generally poor. Their parents live on subsistence farming. There are seventy orphans as a result of the AIDS scourge. Most of the children have poor health due to the lack of proper nutrition and medical care. They do not brush their teeth and are rotten in many cases. In the holidays the children do hand crafts such as basketry to earn some money.

 

Kwisi Primary School

This school is in a rural location 7km from Kabale off the Mbarara Road. The school started in 1957. There are 482 pupils at the school. The school started in 1957. The pupils are mostly interested in volleyball, music, dance and drama. The daily food at the school is potatoes and beans. The children’s background is generally poor. Their parents are peasants. Most of the children have poor health sue to the lack of proper nutrition and medical care. They do not brush their teeth and are rotten in many cases. In the holidays the children dig with hoes and pangas.

 

Rwababa Primary School

This school is in a semi - rural location 4km from Kabale off the Kabale.The school started in 1984. There are 271 pupils at the school. The pupils are mostly interested in music and sports. The daily food at the school is sweet potatoes and beans. The children’s background is generally poor. Many of the children are orphans or have parents who are peasants. Most of the children have poor health due to the lack of proper nutrition and medical care. Their dental health is improving following a brief visit from Rugarama Hospital medical and dental officers. In the holidays the children farm, fetch water, collect fire wood and play football.
