Frequently asked questions

I’ve signed up to volunteer, what next?

The next step in your BrightBites volunteering journey is finding a school. You can reach out to a local school, nursery, or childcare setting using our top tips and templates below.

If you’d prefer, our team can contact schools on your behalf and update you once we have found one. This process usually takes a few months, but we’ll provide all the necessary resources when the time comes.

I am happy to contact schools and offer BrightBites sessions, do you have guidance for this?

I would like assistance in arranging BrightBites visits. What happens next?

I have located a school/nursery that would like BrightBites, what next?

Once you receive a visit request, we will need the following details:

The school’s name and full address.
The number of children attending, along with their ages/year groups.
The confirmed visit date (we recommend scheduling at least a month in advance to allow time for resources to arrive and any necessary DBS arrangements).

For your first session we will also ask for your t-shirt size (S–2XL).

Who is the target audience for BrightBites sessions?

What training is provided for hosting BrightBites sessions?

At this time we are unable to offer 1-2-1 training for all volunteers, but don’t worry! Below you will find useful guidance materials, including presentations, scripts, and step-by-step walk-through videos.

If you’re nervous about hosting a BrightBites session you don’t have to do it alone. You can invite a peer or colleague to join you - just make sure they apply to volunteer, are over 18, and consent to a DBS check.

Getting started with school outreach

Engaging with schools, after-school clubs, and other community groups can be an effective way to encourage families to prioritise regular preventive dental care for themselves and their children. And BrightBites is an excellent opportunity to share an oral care message with a large number of children. Our goal is to make delivering a BrightBites session as easy as possible for you, and the first step is arranging a school! Below are some helpful tips to get started.

Top tips for making contact

When contacting a school, we recommend contacting the headteacher, a classroom teacher, or an office administrator.
While email can be effective, schools are usually more receptive to a quick phone call.
Make sure you explain the BrightBites oral health education scheme. It’s about providing free and engaging oral health education to children, to help them develop healthy habits for life!
When speaking with the school, confirm how many children they’d like to receive BrightBites so we can send you the correct amount of resources like toothbrushes and toothpaste.

What you'll need on the day

BrightBites leaflets (enough for one per child) - the light blue leaflet is for children aged 2-7 and covers toothbrushing, a healthy diet, and advice for parents. The dark blue is for children aged 7-11 covering teeth names and functions, healthy foods, and toothbrushing.

(optional) Visual aids like a bag of sugar, tins of fizzy drinks, or sugary treats
