Dentaid Associate Mwesigwa Boaz Jardel and his team ran three dental outreach clinics in the remote Butanda region of Uganda. These were the charity’s first overseas outreach clinics since the pandemic. Here’s his report:
The long proposed dental outreach clinics were held last week, on the 22nd, 24th, 25th of September 2020 in Butanda sub county, Kabale district. The clinics went smoothly and were completed as scheduled.
Dental health and oral hygiene information was given to all patients. As is the norm these days, covid-19 prevention was incorporated into the information given. Then dental screening and treatment followed.
Overall, 76 patients were treated at Lyakarimila, 55 at Namilyango and 71 at Butanda, making a total of 202 patients. Many more had oral health instruction.
I want to thank Andrew, Ambrose and Glory for the great work done. And all those others (especially the staff at the different health facilities) who helped us in various activities, especially mobilization and crowd control.
I would also like to thank our sponsors, Dentaid, for funding our endeavor, and supporting us in taking oral health treatment to the rural folks.
It was an amazing few days and we’ll be happy to do it all again when the conditions allow.
The only encumbrance came on the roads. As September is the beginning of the rainy season and the roads in these places far away from the towns can really be in bad shape.
But save for a few glitches here and there, we made it through the clinics without any major incident!
