Mobile Dental Unit in Leeds – Andy Evans

Our wonderful volunteers!

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week we had the pleasure of taking our mobile dental unit to St George’s Crypt in Leeds. The Crypt is a centre that provides food, shelter and access to medical care for homeless people. Their aim is to work with individuals to help them move off the streets and into permanent housing, while providing them with support to address any addictions.

Both days the clinics were busy and our team saw a variety of patients from different backgrounds with a range of needs. Our job was to offer them pain relieving dentistry along with dental screening and oral health advice.

The one thing that stuck out for me was our amazing team of volunteers who had given up their time to come and help.  They showed amazing commitment to come and be part of the team.  Felicity, our dental nurse on Tuesday, had come from Leicester and endured a 4 hour coach journey and stayed overnight in Leeds just so she could help.

Our dentist, Nafiza gave up two days of her time to run the clinic.  Gulab, one of our therapists, travelled from Peterborough.  And our other volunteers, Lauren and Sarah also donated their time to provide an amazing amount of support for this project.  It was a real pleasure to work with all of them and watch how they helped and supported the patients.

Dentistry as a profession doesn’t always have the best reputation, but our volunteers showed enormous commitment to helping those who struggle to access care.  I believe that most dental professionals go into dentistry because they care. They want to help people out of pain and to smile again.

I certainly see that this with this team. Thank you to Felicity, Nafiza, Gulab, Lauren and Sarah for helping with the clinic and my Dentaid colleague Naomi who organised the days.  If you would like to help with one of our clinics please get in touch by emailing info@dentaid.org or call us on  01794 324249.
