About our work in Morocco

Dentaid volunteering teams visit  Chefchaouen region in north west Morocco.  They work alongside our Moroccan dental partners to provide outreach dental care in primary and secondary schools.

Using portable dental chairs and pressure cookers for sterilization, you’ll turn classrooms into dental clinics where hundreds of children receive treatment.  Our teams provide emergency extractions and fillings, fluoride varnish programmes, and oral health and toothbrushing advice.

In some schools we visit, up to 70 per cent of children don’t own a toothbrush and they are seen as luxury, unaffordable items.  Therefore, many children will be suffering from severe decay.

Working conditions

No two trips are the same but teams usually visit a different school each day.  Sometimes they’ll also see children from the nearby primary schools or treat the teachers, parents or wider community too.

Oral health education is an important part of our work in Morocco and we work with schools to establish toothbrushing schemes.  All members of the team are asked to promote oral health.  We hope that when we return to schools, we will see a gradual yet long-term improvement in dental health.

We welcome applications from dentists, dental nurses, therapists and hygienists.  Everyone is involved in setting up the clinics and making sure they run smoothly.  The team is led by Dentaid trustee Mark Inman and Moroccan dentist Khadija Bakali and you’ll be accompanied by translators and our local partners.

Our teams fly to Rabat and travel by bus to Chefchaouen – a beautiful city that is often known as the Blue Pearl.  You’ll stay in local hotels and have chance to explore the markets and sights in your time off.

Preparing for your trip

Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise the £1,450 for their trip plus a £300 non-refundable deposit. This covers your flights, accommodation, meals on working days, insurance and dental materials we need to provide free care for all your patients.

Any extra funds go to support Dentaid’s ongoing projects improving access to safe, sustainable dental care.

We can give you lots of help and advice with your fundraising.  You’ll also be invited to a training day before you travel where you’ll meet the rest of your team.
