Husband and wife in ride London challenge
A husband and wife cycling team are taking on the gruelling 100-mile Ride London challenge for Dentaid.
Amar Lal-Sarin and Emma Nguyen will cycle from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on a circular route through London and Surrey before finishing on The Mall in the event expected to attract 20,000 cyclists on July 30.
Although Amar is a keen cyclist and has competed in 4 Iron Man triathlons, Emma usually prefers shorter bike rides cycling to work in Oxford on her trusty pushbike – complete with basket.
“My husband has spent years trying to convince me to get into cycling, however I’ve always shown little interest despite his enthusiasm,” said Emma. “He secretly entered me into the Ride London so when I received the letter I thought it was a mistake – then Amar confessed.
“I took this opportunity to challenge myself in doing something out of my comfort zone and knew it would be a great achievement, so agreed to participate.”

“We decided it would be worthwhile raising funds for a cause that we truly believe in.
We both work as dentists in practices in Oxfordshire, working in an area of Oxford, which is a socially deprived and the patients have particularly high dental needs. We frequently treat patients with high decay risks, complex medical problems, difficulties in access and social deprivation. So it was clear to us that we wanted to raise money for a dental charity which would use these resources for the patients who urgently require dental care.
“Both myself and my husband have also volunteered for Crisis in the past so we know that dental access can be a problem for the homeless or those on the streets. I feel that Dentaid has the resources to provide care to these vulnerable patients.”
Emma and Amar’s training is going well and the couple have completed several long distance cycle rides in preparation. They are also going to spin classes to prepare themselves for the big race.
The couple will join 6 other cyclists who are also raising funds for Dentaid in Ride London.
