Our Mobile Dental Units
Dentaid’s outreach work is built off the backs of our mobile dental units, each stocked with all the equipment necessary to help our volunteer teams provide life-changing dental treatment and oral health advice.
Our first mobile dental unit took the roads back in 2017, following the success of our inaugural pilot project in West Yorkshire.
Each of our eleven dental units, along with a static dental trailer has its own story.
Dua
Dependable DUA is the oldest in our fleet and has travelled the furthest of all of our mobile dental units. She’s been with us since 2016 and was used to supply Dentaid’s first ever mobile dental clinic in the UK at the Trussell Trust in Salisbury.
Funded with support from the Wesleyan Foundation and Rotary clubs in the south, DUA has been hard at work across all four nations of the UK. She now works mostly as a solid backup for us, covering clinics during especially busy times or when other vehicles are off the road.
Becky
The second of our charity dental units to hit the roads, Welsh wonder Becky (BKY) arrived at Dentaid in 2019 with a patriotic red dragon design!
Becky has been putting in the miles offering support to those in need in places as far apart as the Channel Islands and North Yorkshire. She was also used for our public access clinics in Suffolk where up to 40 patients a day sat in her dental chair.
We’re grateful for the support of Oral-B Professionals in helping to expand Becky's operations far and wide.
Liddle
First joining us in 2022, LDL (pronounced ‘liddle’) arrived thanks to a donation from MyDentist in Manchester to help Dentaid expand its work across the country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
LDL has visited hundreds of patients with health inequalities over the last few years, ranging from fishing communities to city centres, but you’ll most likely see her in the south of England as part of Dentaid’s partnership with NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
Bwe
Beewee first joined Dentaid in the winter of 2022 after being donated to us by Bupa Dental Care. After a refit to trim her down, she’s now one of our hardest-working charity dental units!
Beewee held her first clinic at Trinity House in Winchester on a snowy winter’s day and she now offers care at locations across the south, supporting those experiencing homelessness, poverty or social exclusion, or are affected by cancer.
Kimberley
Kimberley came to Dentaid as our first-ever custom-made charity dental unit. She’s named in loving memory of FMC co-founder Kimberley Finlayson who sadly was the first UK citizen to die from Covid-19 in 2020.
Kimberley’s husband Ken raised over £55,000 in her legacy by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, with further funding from Straumann’s cyclists, who rode 500 miles across Spain, and a grant from the Green Hall Foundation. We are honoured that Kimberley serves as a fitting tribute to Ken’s wife and the part she played in the dental industry.
Annie
Annie helps to free vulnerable members of communities across the Southeast and East of England from toothache and dental-related health issues.
She was bought for Dentaid by one of our main corporate partners, Septodont, and named in honour of Annie Schiller, who set up the company in 1932 alongside her husband Nestor.
Annie is based at our Kent hub in Maidstone and is out and about most days delivering care across Kent, Essex, Sussex and Greater London.
Nestor
Nestor is the perfect complement to Annie as he’s named after Nestor Schiller who co-founded Septodont with his wife and was refurbished thanks to generous support from the company.
Nestor joined our fleet in 2024 and is used to deliver charity dental clinics across the South West, with occasional visits further north as well. Nestor is used to help those experiencing homelessness, abuse and poverty in the region, allowing them to access treatment to relieve their pain in a supportive and welcoming environment.
James
James is named after, and dedicated to the memory of, James Finlayson, who died in August 2022 at the age of 25. FMC co-founder Ken Finlayson, James’ father, walked the Camino pilgrimage route in gruelling conditions in Spain in 2023, raising more than £55,000 to help fund the unit.
James was also funded thanks to Gensmile and Hague Dental, who kindly supplied and fitted the dental equipment for us.
Lottie
Lottie first took to the roads in June 2024, kindly supported by The Health Lottery.
Within five months she’d already been put well through her paces, holding more than 50 clinics supporting those experiencing homelessness, harm and abuse across all four corners of the UK.
Lottie’s permanent home is at our new hub in northern England. We’re looking forward to taking her to new towns and cities in the north of England in coming months and years.
Clover
Clover is our lean, green machine – the first of its kind offered by Dentaid. Funded with the backing of the Bupa Foundation, she uses rooftop solar panels to provide environmentally friendly dental treatment for people experiencing homelessness.
ULEZ-compliant and under 3.5 tonnes, Clover has been criss-crossing the UK since November 2024, when she began delivering care in Northern Ireland. You’ll mostly find her in London and other city centres, helping those facing health inequalities live lives free of long-term pain while reducing our carbon footprint.
Manny
State-of-the-art Manny is the latest to join our fleet of mobile dental units making her maiden journey in June 2025.
We’ve been working hard to equip and rebuild her to ensure she’s as high-tech and ready to serve as possible, bringing vital dental care to people who would otherwise go without.
Dentaid are hugely grateful to Straumann, whose hard-working riders helped to fund Manny by taking their bikes 460 miles from the top to toe of Portugal in Autumn 2024, raising more than £80,000 in the process.
