Charity climbers carrying dental chair reach Snowdon summit

A group of heavy-lifting climbers have reached the top of Mount Snowdon carrying a dental chair – raising more than £10,000 for Dentaid The Dental Charity.

Bupa Dental Care’s property team took the bright blue furry chair more than 1,000 metres to the summit of Wales’ highest peak, also known as Yr Wyddfa, on May 15th.

Money raised from the challenge will help us to provide outreach dental care for people experiencing homelessness, poverty, harm and abuse across the UK.

More than 20 people were involved in the climb, taking it in terms to lift the chair up terrain which included 45-degree inclines. The chair was specially designed for the challenge and sat on a rig built by Arc interior solutions, allowing teams to carry it on their shoulders on their way up the mountain.

Group leader David Liepa, UK Health and Safety Compliance Officer for Bupa Healthcare, said the idea to do something ‘memorable and genuinely challenging’ came about after the group had completed several other high-profile fundraising events, including the Three Peaks Challenge in 2024 and a 24hr bike, row and ski marathon last year.

“Carrying a dental chair up Snowdon felt bold, slightly mad, but ultimately purposeful – the kind of challenge that would make people stop, listen, and hopefully donate,” he said.

“We are all incredibly proud and absolutely thrilled to have completed such a demanding challenge. It was a true team effort from start to finish, made even more memorable by the fantastic weather for most of the journey – though a bit chilly and windy at the top, which only added to the sense of achievement!
“Raising over £10,000 for Dentaid and not only beating, but exceeding our fundraising goal, makes every step, every lift, and every moment truly worthwhile.”

Dentaid has 12 mobile dental units which travel the UK providing care at locations including night shelters, women’s refuges and community centres, ensuring vulnerable people can seek access to oral healthcare.

Volunteer dentists and dental nurses provide treatments, including extractions, fillings and oral health advice for many of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Jill Harding, head of fundraising and communications at Dentaid The Dental Charity said: “When we first heard about this challenge we thought, “they are mad!” But the team has made sure this is a well organised and supported challenge and we’re so proud to have seen them make the top.”
