Coronavirus Update

The dental charity in the UK and overseas

July 2020

I am writing to update you on the situation regarding Dentaid as we try to restart our charity’s work amid the Coronavirus crisis.
You won’t be surprised to learn that the pandemic has had a devastating effect on Dentaid.

The remainder of our 2020 overseas volunteering trips have been postponed until next year, our UK work was suspended and fundraising events cancelled. In March, Dentaid staff were furloughed in order to ensure the future financial viability of our charity.

After several months of hibernation, we are now taking our first steps to safely restart our work. We know that the demand for our projects will be greater than ever and our commitment to meet that demand has never been stronger.

In the UK, we hope to start clinics for homeless and vulnerable people in the autumn. We are currently looking at ways of safely delivering our mobile dental service and are in discussion with several charities that support homeless and insecurely housed clients who really need our help.

We also hope to restart our work in Kirklees providing free dental care for those who are unable to access treatment and we are planning to run more quayside clinics for fishermen as part of the SeaFit programme.

Overseas, we will try to support our project partners who request help with sourcing equipment or running outreach programmes. And we have been heartened by the number of volunteers willing to postpone their 2020 volunteering trip until next year.

We know that their hard work and enthusiasm will be needed more than ever as they deliver dental care and oral health programmes in some of the poorest and most remote communities in the world.

Our fundraising programme has been hit hard by the pandemic and we have had to cancel most of our events. Although we have been able to generate a small amount of funds through online activities, we will face serious challenges in the months ahead.

Despite this, we remain committed to delivering safe, sustainable dental care for the most vulnerable people in our society. We are sure that our wonderful friends, volunteers and fundraisers will continue to support us and we hope that before long, our incredible teams will be back offering dental treatment for the people who need us most.

We look forward to updating you soon.

With thanks and best wishes
The Dentaid Team
