who we help - Fishing communities

Fishing communities

Fishermen who work at sea for long periods of time can find it a real challenge to access dental care. Seafaring is a highly dangerous industry. Fishing communities face a high risk of injury due to hazardous working conditions that can take a toll on their physical and mental health. Toothache and other issues stemming from poor oral health only exacerbate that risk.

Making and keeping healthcare appointments can prove difficult when the need to follow the fishing season and earn a living takes precedence. It’s not uncommon for appointments booked months in advance to be missed when conditions make it essential for fishermen to head out onto the water. As a result it’s difficult for many to remain registered with dental services and some can go years between visits.

Out at sea, long shifts mean it can be tough to eat a balanced diet. Many fishermen turn to high-calorie, high-sugar foods that are readily available, which can lead to a range of health problems, including issues with teeth and gums.

Fishing communities are often based in some of the most deprived coastal areas of the UK. High demand for healthcare services in these regions means fishermen and their families may face long waits to see a dental professional.

With our mobile dental units able to deliver care directly to the quayside, Dentaid the Dental Charity can reach the areas where fishermen embark and disembark from fishing vessels. We work alongside the Fishermen’s Mission and the Seafarers Hospital Society through their Seafit campaign, visiting coastal locations around the British Isles where support is most needed. Seafarers can access a range of health services and get advice on how to maintain active, healthy lifestyles both at sea and on land.

In addition to emergency treatment, oral cancer screening and advice, we also offer our BrightBites oral health programme to families in fishing communities, teaching young children about the importance of toothbrushing and regular dental appointments.

By helping those who fish for a living while they’re on dry land, Dentaid can ensure that their health is protected while out on the seas, allowing them to focus on the task at hand.

At Dentaid we believe everyone deserves access to safe, pain-relieving dental care. We need your help to continue to provide free dental care and oral health advice for vulnerable adults and children from under-served communities across the UK, and overseas
