Dentaid is working hard to improve access to dental care in the community of Melkhoutfontein in the south of the country. Our volunteer team will visit schools, nurseries and community buildings to run dental clinics that provide emergency dental treatment for people of all ages. You’ll also establish fluoride varnish and oral health programmes in the communities you visit.
You’ll use portable dental equipment and many of the clincs will take place in classrooms, halls and even out in the open. These are busy clinics and people will travel many miles for treatment.
Dentaid’s first volunteering trip to South Africa was a great success and hundreds of people were seen by the team. We are looking forward to returning in Autumn 2020 and will publish the dates of the trip soon.
Dentaid has teamed up with the South African charity Dreamcatcher to run this trip. Dreamcatcher has a range of projects in Melkhoutfontein that improve the enviroment, employment prospects and health of the local community.
Our team will stay in small groups in guest houses run by kumammas who often welcome international guests. The team will be accompanied by Dreamcatcher representatives throughout the trip.
On your days off you’ll have the chance to assist with Dreamcatcher’s community projects such as mural painting, visit the local beaches and go on wildlife trips.
The team will travel from London to Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to George.
Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise to cover the cost of their trip. The £2,500 you raise pays for your flights, accommodation, travel in South Africa, meals on working days and the dental materials required to provide free dental care for hundreds of patients. Any extra fundraising supports Dentaid’s projects that increase access to safe, sustainable dental care long after you have gone home.
Dentaid can give you lots of fundraising advice and support and help you to publicise your trip. We can help you set up a fundraising page to keep track of your donations.
All team members will be asked to attend a training day before the trip where you’ll meet your trip leader and have the chance to ask questions.
