Dentaid’s work in Kenya is going from strength to strength and this is now one of our most popular volunteering experiences.  You will be working alongside our Kenyan dental partners providing outreach dental care in schools, old people’s homes, rural clinics and remote community buildings.  There is a huge need for dental care in Kenya and many people struggle to access basis treatment. Our teams will take dental care to these communities using portable equipment and pressure cookers for sterilization.  You might be working in a classroom, a church hall or even out in the open but you’ll be providing life-changing dental care.  These are busy clinics with long queues and people walk many miles for treatment.  In 2018 our team saw 1267 people in 10 clinics.

FAQs

Our Kenyan trip leader is dental therapist and Dentaid trustee Sally Reading who has visited Kenya many times.  For the first week of the trip the team works alongside our Kenyan dental partner Ben Mburu in Nyahururu.  Some clinics take place in his surgery and you’ll also go into the community to provide emergency treatments, fluoride varnish programmes, oral health education projects and to establish toothbrushing schemes.   The second week is spent at a Dentaid-supported project near Dundori where the team will work in remote health centres, schools and community buildings.

We welcome applications from dentists, hygienists, therapists and dental nurses.  Everyone works together to set up the clinics and pack up at the end of the day.  Oral health education is a key part of our work in Kenya and all team members are asked to promote dental health.

The team will spend the first week at the Thompson Falls Lodge and will stay in local hotels and guest houses for the rest of the trip.  You’ll eat in local restaurants or with the communities you visit and there will be the opportunity for sightseeing and visiting wildlife on your days off.

Terms and conditions

Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise to cover the cost of their trip. The £2,300 we ask you to raise covers your flights, accommodation, travel, food on working days and all the dental supplies we need to provide free dental care for hundreds of people.  Any extra funds will support Dentaid’s ongoing work in Kenya as we continue to support dental projects after you have gone home.  Travel insurance, visas, sight seeing excursions and any vaccinations you require are not included in the price of your trip.

Dentaid can give you lots of support and ideas and help you set up an online fundraising page. We can also help to publicise your trip. All volunteers will be invited to a training day where you will meet your team and trip leader.
