Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa which is home to wonderful welcoming people and an incredible array of wildlife. Dentaid has sent equipment to the dental department at Itezhi Tezhi hospital and works with local dentists to help them provide oral health programmes and outreach clinics.

Treatments required include fillings, scaling, polishing and extractions and all our volunteers will be asked to promote oral health.  In many communties no dental care is available and people have to walk up to 120 km to receive treatment.

Our teams will work in schools and remote clinics using portable dental equipment.  We transform classrooms, churches and community buildings into dental surgeries.

Terms and Conditions FAQ

Dentaid volunteers visited Zambia for the first time in June 2018.  Among the places they visited was the remote village of Nanzhilla where one of their patients had been suffering dental pain for nine years because there was no dental service in the area.

They also treated game rangers who work in Kafue National Park, schoolchildren and remote communities who walked miles to attend local health centres.  There can be long distances between clinics with bumpy roads and ageing transport.

On occasions our teams worked out in the open.  In 8 clinics they treated 470 adults and 156 children and also ran toothbrushing and oral health sessions in schools.

Dentaid is planning to build its relationships with its dental partners in the capital Lusaka to offer new outreach clinics in 2019 while continuing to provide essential care for more remote communities.

Volunteers are required to fundraise £2500 to cover the cost of their flights, accommodation, meals on working days, travel in Zambia and to support Dentaid’s ongoing work improving access to dental care around the world.

Sightseeing, visas, travel insurance and food on your days off are not included.

The trip will be led by Gail Taylor who is a highly epxerienced Dentaid team leader.  All volunteers will be invited to attend a training day before they travel where they can meet the trip leader and other members of the team.
